These two are frequently compared as equivalents, and on privacy they are not close. WhatsApp encrypts everything end-to-end by default; Telegram encrypts almost nothing that way. On features the ranking reverses.

Encryption: Not A Close Call

Every WhatsApp message, call and attachment is end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol, in one-to-one and group conversations alike, with no option to turn it off. Telegram's default cloud chats are encrypted to and on its servers, with Telegram holding the keys, so the company can read them. Telegram's genuinely end-to-end mode, Secret Chats, is opt-in, one-to-one only, device-bound and unavailable in groups. The practical result is that a typical WhatsApp group is confidential from its provider and a typical Telegram group is not.

The easiest way to see this yourself: install Telegram on a new device and your entire history appears after a login code. Do the same with WhatsApp and it does not, because the provider does not hold your messages.

Metadata: Both Collect, Differently

WhatsApp's weakness is not content but context. Your phone number is a stable identifier inside Meta, your contact list is uploaded for matching, group membership is server-side, and Meta has said account information is used across its products. Telegram's servers hold the messages themselves, which makes its metadata question almost moot: the content exposure is larger than any metadata question. Neither is a good choice for someone whose primary concern is the social graph.

Protocol Provenance

WhatsApp licensed an existing, peer-reviewed protocol. Telegram wrote its own, MTProto, which has drawn sustained criticism from cryptographers for departing from established constructions without a stated benefit. WhatsApp's implementation is not open-source, so you are trusting Meta to have deployed the protocol correctly, which is a real limitation; the protocol design itself is not in question.

Features: Telegram Wins Clearly

Groups of enormous size, public channels with unlimited subscribers, a mature bot and API platform, very large file transfers, folders, editing, scheduled messages, and desktop clients that operate independently rather than mirroring a phone. Telegram is a better piece of software for community building and broadcasting, and that is what its scale is built on.

WhatsApp is better at being a phone replacement: reliable delivery on poor connections, voice and video calling quality, and universal adoption in many countries where it functions as basic infrastructure.

Moderation And Content

Telegram's large public channels and light moderation have made it a distribution channel for scams, malware and coordinated abuse, which is a user-facing risk distinct from privacy. WhatsApp's encryption limits what it can moderate at all, so it relies on account-level signals and user reports instead.

The Honest Recommendation

For private conversation, WhatsApp is the better of the two and Signal is better than both. For public communities and file sharing, Telegram is the better product, and you should treat every message in it as though the company can read it, because it can.
