The most important fact about this comparison is one many Telegram users do not know: Telegram is not an end-to-end encrypted messenger by default, and most Telegram conversations are readable by Telegram.

Telegram's Actual Encryption Model

Ordinary Telegram chats, which the app calls cloud chats, are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and encrypted on those servers, but Telegram holds the keys. That is transport and at-rest encryption, the same category as any well-run web service, and it means the provider can read your messages, comply with a lawful demand for them, and restore them to a new device, which is exactly why your history appears instantly when you log in somewhere new. That convenience is the tell: a service that can hand you your entire history from a fresh device with only a login code was never end-to-end encrypted.

Telegram does offer Secret Chats, which are genuinely end-to-end encrypted. They are opt-in per conversation, one-to-one only, tied to a specific device so they do not sync, and unavailable for group chats and channels. In practice very few conversations use them.

Signal's Model

Everything is end-to-end encrypted, always: one-to-one chats, group chats, calls, attachments and profile data. There is no non-encrypted mode to fall back into and no setting to disable it. Signal cannot restore your history to a new device because it does not have it, which is the inconvenience that proves the guarantee.

The Cryptography Itself

Signal uses the Signal Protocol, published, peer-reviewed, formally analysed and adopted by WhatsApp, Google Messages and others. Telegram uses MTProto, a scheme of its own design, which cryptographers have criticised on general principle and in specific published analyses. The objection is not that a break is known, but that rolling your own protocol forgoes decades of scrutiny for no stated benefit.

Metadata And Identity

Both require a phone number, though both now support usernames so you can converse without revealing it. Telegram's server necessarily knows a great deal, since it stores the messages. Signal deliberately minimises what it can know through sealed sender and enclave-based contact discovery, and has published subpoena responses showing how little it was able to produce.

What Telegram Is Genuinely Better At

Almost everything that is not privacy. Very large groups, public channels with unlimited subscribers, a serious bot platform, generous file sizes, excellent multi-device synchronisation, and desktop clients that work independently rather than as a phone mirror. As a broadcast and community platform it has no real competitor, and that is what most people actually use it for.

Choose By Use

Judge Telegram as a social and publishing platform and it performs well. Judge it as a private messenger and it fails, because its default is not private and its private mode is a corner feature. Use Signal for private conversation and Telegram for public communities, and never assume a Telegram group chat is confidential.
