How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account
Complete guide to deleting your Instagram account including data backup, what happens to your DMs, and alternative platforms.
Instagram has grown from a simple photo-sharing app into a massive advertising and data-collection platform under Meta's ownership. The app tracks your browsing habits, location data, facial features in photos, shopping interests, and social connections to build detailed advertising profiles. If you have decided to reclaim your privacy and delete your Instagram account, this guide covers everything you need to know.
Start by downloading your data archive. Open Instagram, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, and select Data Download. Enter your email address and choose either HTML or JSON format. Instagram will email you a link to download your archive within 48 hours. This archive includes your photos, videos, stories archive, messages, profile information, comments, likes, search history, and ad interaction data. Review this archive before deleting to ensure you have saved everything important, especially photos and videos you may not have backed up elsewhere.
Before deletion, review your connected accounts and services. Many people use Instagram Login to access other apps and services. Check Settings, then Security, then Apps and Websites to see all connected third-party services. Update each service with alternative login credentials. Also, if you run a business account or creator account, download your analytics data and inform your followers about where they can find you after the deletion.
To delete your account, you must use a web browser — the mobile app only offers the option to deactivate (temporarily disable), not permanently delete. Navigate to Instagram's Delete Your Account page at instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/. Log in if prompted, select a reason for leaving from the dropdown menu, re-enter your password, and click "Permanently delete my account." Like Facebook, Instagram provides a 30-day grace period during which you can cancel the deletion by logging back in.

If you log in during this period, the deletion request is canceled automatically. After 30 days, Instagram begins the permanent deletion process, which can take up to 90 additional days to remove all your data from their servers and backup systems.
Understanding what persists after deletion is important for setting expectations. Direct messages you sent to other users remain in their inboxes. Photos and videos that others saved, screenshotted, or shared will still exist in their collections. Comments you made on other people's posts are removed, but cached versions may appear temporarily. Your username becomes available for others to claim after deletion is complete, so if you ever want to return with the same username, consider deactivating instead of deleting.
The deactivation option is worth considering if you are not certain about permanent deletion. Deactivating your account hides your profile and content but preserves everything. You can reactivate at any time by logging back in. However, deactivation does not stop Meta from using the data it has already collected about you for advertising purposes, nor does it prevent ongoing tracking through Meta Pixel on other websites.
After deleting Instagram, take steps to reduce Meta's ongoing surveillance. Remove the Instagram app from your phone (uninstalling prevents background data collection). Clear Instagram cookies from all browsers. Use privacy-focused browser extensions to block Meta tracking scripts. Consider switching to privacy-respecting alternatives like Pixelfed (a federated, open-source alternative that does not track users or show ads), Glass (a paid photo-sharing community with no algorithms or ads), or VSCO (which has a stronger privacy stance than Instagram). Each of these alternatives prioritizes the photo-sharing experience without the invasive data collection that defines Instagram's business model.
